6 speed transmission

My dad just purchased a 2008 Tahoe and after looking at it, there only seems to be a 4 speed transmission. I thought GM was going to make a change in 08' for the 6 speed. I did notice the 3/4 ton suburban can come with a 6 speed, and if I recall correctly, the 07' Denali also comes with a six speed. What happen? I thought most companies were trying to shift to more gears and GM just missed by a year. He did say he gets around 17 mpg though. Only about 800 total miles so far.
