Since you are taking the inlet manifold off anyways, I would do one more check, an old fashoned compression test. This would point out if you have a head gasket leak or something like that to cause overheating at idle and a real grody cooling system.

With the IM off, you are 90% there to lifting the heads.

: If your mechanical the IM job isn't too bad. Give yourself a good weekend if you have a slow wrench hand.
: I suspect the overheat is caused by a bad thermostat. Your cleaning product may also have dislodged debris which is now blocking the head gasket. Or the clean may have killed an already-weak head gasket. Try and fix the overheat before you do the IM. I'd put it a T-stat and see what happens.
