I think Ben is right and you have a bearing problem. If it is a spun bearing then you are borrowed time. For the oil to get dark that fast its either excessive carbon or metal particles. I would bet if you sent in an oil sample for analysis it would show high levels of cast iron (engine block) and/or babbit and copper. I just had a thought - I wonder if you took an oil sample and ran a powerful magnet (rare earth) through it. Would the magnet pickup suspended iron particles? That would be a simple test for a spun bearing.

The Lucas oil treatment should buy you a little time but it sounds like you have a serious problem. I sure hope I'm wrong!
