5 vs 6 vs 8 lugs on 88-98 trucks

Why the 2500 trucks of that era had either 6 or 8 lugs ? I know that C1500 had 5 lugs but K1500 was a 6 lug design. But I see same 6 lug pattern on 2500 trucks and then 8 lugs on same models. What's up with that.
