I'm back!
'96 Burb, K1500 - today it started making this terrible chattering noise in the drivetrain when taking off from a stop. Clears up with a "Klunk" around 40mph. If I start out in 4wd - it doesn't do it!
Only a couple of times has it just completely free-wheeled while making that noise, and that was while in reverse. Put it in park, then drive, and away we went.
I jacked up the rear end. Gave it the gas. No chatter. Put the parking break on to simulate a load. No chatter. Put the brake on with enough force the engine could barely turn the rear wheels - no chatter.
Lower it back down, take off from a stop - sounds like a bunch of marbles in a tin can and then "CLUNK" around 40mph. Again, if I hit the 4wd High switch, it stops.
I was thinking transfer case, but the fact that it didn't do it when jacked up with a load has me thinking limited slip rear-end.
Any ideas?
