I've had this happen twice on my '91 but was in the dead of winter (35 degrees F) and symptom went away after things warmed up and I shut off the igntion and re-started. Shifts were brutally harsh so I pulled off the road to check the fluid and found I was down a quart. After topping it off problem never came back so I check more frequently now.
