: Agree with OnBelay. Comply with codes.
: Rent a three-point tractor with a 12" auger and drill down at least 36" to avoid frost upheaval.
: Fill with concrete and go at least 4" above grade with concrete. Use Simpson Strong-Tie post anchors set in the concrete. Some are adjustable, while the lesser cost one's are fixed.
I hate when, deep down, I know the answer but I keep hoping that someone will tell me otherwise. So, yes, I readily acknowledge that post anchors set in concrete is best. My local code permits all of these options so that is not much help.
I am inclined to go with 99C20Sub (backfill with crushed stone) because not having to deal with concrete is appealing. The downside is finding a convenient source for 6 holes worth of crushed stone.
I guess that setting the concrete is not that much harder but the associated Strong-Tie hardware has additional costs.
I don't know why I am getting hung up on an extra $50-$75 on a $2000 project but in my mind, everything adds up. I am always afraid that if I stop counting my pennies at each step, pretty soon I will be counting $100's.
Thanks for the quick feedback. I know I can always count on you guys.
