Ben beat me to the flare nut wrench post, and I'll let that sleeping dog lay there...
As far as the oil goes, I'll also wimp out on getting into a "best oil" discussion. Instead, I'll tell you to use whatever it is you've been using.
Highway miles are the easiest use your rig will get. If you aren't using whatever you consider to be best in day-to-day, city driving application (or day-to-day, truck is parked and waiting for trip use), then you are doing more damage to the engine than you could ever do on a long haul.
Generally speaking, I would bet it would be the consensus of most "car guys" that a breakdown on a trip is caused by the use of the vehicle and maintenance (or lack of)done before the trip.
