I don't use Simple Green or any of those kinds of cleaners on the interior just because I feared exactly
what you describe

303 is all I use and some times Windex over spray will be wiped before 303'ing it

Done and agree that maybe a covering the best. I like the type that has a loooong plastic string
wrapped the whole dia

I've had good luck with bicycle handle bar tape on buddies who didn't want the normal steering
wheel covers. They come in varying colors
