Some fuel system related DTCs will cause the gauge to read empty and the Low Fuel message to be set. For example, P1172 will do this.

If there is a way you could get ahold of a scan tool, you could check for DTCs, and you could also look at the individual fuel level sensors (one for each of the front/back tanks). This might help understand the problem.

Did all of these problems begin at the same time?

: On those long trips the fuel gauge will stay at the same reading until the ignition is turned off and back on. On a couple of occasions the fuel gauge registers empty and the low fuel light come on with ¼ to ½ tank of gas in the tank. The ABS and Brake dash lights occasionally illuminate and usually stay on until the ignition is turned off (even on short trips).
