Thanks for the info. I can see my boot is ripped already so I will have to get one of those also when I do the fix.

: Just fixed mine in the 2001. You have to buy the whole shifter but I found a new one on EBAY for $35. It's easy enough to replace except the rubber boot disentegrated when I was working on it. Gaping hole for the passenger to look at now. In case u want to try and fix yours, the wires get rubbed through where they pass through a couple of small plastic clips. My guess is your wires flex just right when in '3' to complete the connection. Don't expect it to work much longer.
