Returning home from 150 mile trip, driving highway speed on Interstate. Come down a long hill into a flat, and all of a sudden the "Stabilitrak" warning light engages, blinking and sounding chime for about 5 seconds.

Driving on a level piece of Interstate on a 98' July day in the sun is not a typical place to have traction problems, so this obviously concerned me. Quick check of gauges shows all normal; trans temp was 202 so wasn't concerned, figured an electrical gremlin must have given his life so we could all be entertained by the pleasant chime sound.

40 miles later, near home, again come off a hill into a flat, and have a repeat performance. Again, no perceptible change in vehicle performance,

Pull in the drive, empty the truck, and decide to clean it up. Get done vacuuming, and decide to move it a little so I can wash in the shade. Cranks but no start, full display of engine and other warning lights on dash now. Can hear the fuel pump run with KO, bang on the tank but no start.

Plug in scanner: no set codes, but "pending" PO171 and 174; lean bank one and lean bank 2. Go through all the other modules, find no set codes, but ghost code of communication error with engine control module.

Attach fuel pressure gauge; 13 lbs pressure and spec is 51-55, pull tank and pump, replace, and once again she runs like a champ.

So here's what I am thinking: BCM was seeing fuel pressure out of comfort zone, and was able to determine that the BCM could not adequately control engine speed for engagement of Stabilitrak program , so set off the lights as a warning that Stabilitrak would not function properly.

No engine speed control + computers talking to each other = no stability control engagement. Kinda thinking it's cool they can communicate like that.

Had noticed a slight (1-2 mpg) decrease in mileage over last 4 weeks, now wondering if this is also an indicator, engine having to work that much harder because of fuel starvation.

In tank filter did not look overly clogged or dirty, so not convinced that having a non-replaceable fuel filter is the culprit. As a die hard maintenance believer, it's also a little hard to not want to replace them.
