here are some things to consider:
1. In tank fuel pumps last about 10 seconds when you ask them to pump air. this is essentially what you did when you ran out of gas so I'd say you took some life out of the front pump.
2. I would consider replacing the front unit again JUST BECAUSE you ran out of gas and most likely hurt it's life.
3. After replacing the front assembly see what the gauge does....you'll know then if you have to do anything to the rear.
Quick comments about fuel module assemblies:
1. Aftermarket and GM (AC Delco) units can have non-compatible sending units. Example: you replace your original assembly with a Carter replacement and some time down the road the sender goes bad you cannot use a GM sending unit to fix it. So always go GM/AC Delco or make sure you buy the correct sender during future repairs.
2. When replacing fuel module assemblies (or sending units) make sure the float arm is bent properly. They can and do get bent during shipping. Make sure that arm touches the bottom of the tank at it's full travel so you at least know that empty is accurate.
