Sounds like you boiled your brake fluid.
Not sure if pumping more would have helped cause it sounds like your load was more than the truck could handle. If the trailer brakes worked you might have had a chance.
You might want to flush out and replace that fluid.
Where did you spend $1000? I couldn't tell from the post.
