: Sounds like you boiled your brake fluid.
: Not sure if pumping more would have helped cause it sounds like your load was more than the truck could handle. If the trailer brakes worked you might have had a chance.
: You might want to flush out and replace that fluid.
: Where did you spend $1000? I couldn't tell from the post.
Agree on boiling your fluid. For sure bleed/flush it.
There is a pin lock out for most surge brakes so that you can lock them out when going in reverse
My bet is that the surge brakes were not in good order. Most likely bad fluid or no fluid has been
my experience with rentals.
Pumping the brake pedal only helps if the fluid has boiled and/or the drum shoes have worn or drum
expanded by heat.
For 'next' time, set our parking brake to gain a bit more brake pedal
All 4L60E trannies are weak links for towing heavy and you were heavy for a half ton. Ditto
the diff on any GM full sized half ton truck.
Okay with the distance you went.
Bet that trailer and lift weighed over 6,000 lbs
Here is HOW2 go downhill towing heavy.
DO NOT ride the brakes. Use your engine braking via the Tow/Haul button and manually shifting into
lower gears BEFORE you need to.
When braking, brake hard and long enough to reduce your speed to just 5 or so MPH below your
desired speed.
Then depend on the tranny/engine to allow your brakes time to cool.
1 mile isn't that long and why I think that trailer and lift weighs much more. Also think the
trailer brakes not in good order or maybe not even working.
Think they own you payment of a brake inspection and bleed/flush with DOT4 fluid
