That sounds like part salesman BS to me. You'll want to clear the P0420 code but you'd need to do that even if you would have bought new O2 sensors. Disconnect your battery while your putting the pipe on and your codes should be cleared by the time your done. Disconnecting the battery doesn't clear codes on newer vehicles but it should work for yours.
