transmission plug - '99 454 K2500

I have managed to strip the tranny drain plug bolt. I hear that s is common on these models.

Can you guys give the instructions to drain the fluid by removing the perimeter bolts in a fairly non-messy method? Or is just making a mess going to be part of the deal?

It s my understanding that after removing the pan the nut can be removed from the inside and the bolt replaced.
