: What tires would suitable for winter driving, full snow tires or mud & snow? She will mainly be driving around town.

I lived in Reno for several years. Snow in Reno is usually fairly light. Around town, regular M+S tires sufficed.

The thing she needs to watch out for is 'black ice' - where there was some melting during the day that becomes icy at night. With a little snow on top, it can crop up very unexpectedly.

*Always* carry tire chains in the trunk - summer or winter - when driving in the 'hills'. you never know when you will need them. One year I was up at Tahoe and there was a major snow storm - in august!

BTW, For tire work, I have good things to say about the Reno Vulcanizing Works. They are located on Virginia Street just north of downtown and have been there since 'forever'. They were very helpful with a Suburban problem of mine when I was up there a few years back. You might ask them for their recommendations on tires.
