: I found some web postings on another forum that indicate that the holes in the speaker mounting plates can be widened to accommodate 6x9" speakers. May head over to the Pick N Pull this weekend and see if I can get a pair of mounting plates for modification. Lots of good aftermarket 6x9s available - but need to watch the mounting depth. The OE 4x10s are a tad under 2.5" deep.

: I've never seen cones warp like this one did in normal use. Thinking Delco had a bad run of speakers and didn't catch this one in QA. Too bad, because the rest of the speaker (foam edging, spider, tweeter) seems to be in great shape.

I would think twice about this. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

I have heard all sorts of combinations; factory 6X9, medium quality 6X9, and high quality 6X9's, with and without more amplifier power. The fact is that even if you can fit them in there, sound quality will suffer because the "cabinet", or sound reflecting area, is not adequate for the 6X9 to create more bass, and the speaker then gets muddy and doesn't sound as good.

If you are running without extra amplification, I am very sure you will get distorted sound from 6X9 speakers at anything above minimal volume. If you have an amplifier, you will get better sound from 4X10 speakers at all volumes because the end product (sound reproduction) will be cleaner.

The mounting location for the 4X10s in a Sub of your body style has been known to kill many speakers the way yours went; the external sheetmetal catches a lot of heat and radiates it right into the body back there. Radiating heat is like water, it will look for the easiest route to follow. The speaker area does not have as much insulation, the speaker frame absorbs the heat and warps. Back when I ran a stereo shop, there would be times we had to pry the speaker out because the frame had torqued itself against the mounting hole.
