it's no issue to pop the spring out without the tool, there are several videos on YouTube showing how it is done. Just pop it out with a flat-bladed screwdriver. Getting the spring back in is trickier, you either need the compression tool or you can do what I did (which is shown in the video) and compress the spring in a vise and use three zip ties to lock it down in compress position. You then insert the spring back in, and cut the ties. The last one can be a little tricky to cut and get the spring to stay in place. I had to do it a couple of times before I got it to work. I also believe NAPA has the compression tool.
