Guess this needs to be readdressed, as it's been a while and the 'new' crowd might not have seen those old threads.

The side post is a dumb design to begin with. Made worse with the addition of that second cable/lug and that lead washer between'm.

That lead washer crushes as the bolt is torqued. This lead washer is one time use thing.

If used again, then the crush washer will allow the bolt to go too deep into the battery connection/terminal.

This will then allow the bolt to both crack the battery case to allow acid (both vapor and liquid) wick into the lug and cable. In some cases it will wick down to the starter. The other is that the connection is now loosey goosey and intermittent.

Your alternator will then load dump the whole electrical system and kill itself slowly. Once the diodes have been compromised this way, they will die sooner than later. Load dumping will create large voltage spikes, which will kill everything over time. Wacky behavior is one symptom and wiggling/touching/etc the cable to have it work again is one key indicator.

All of this is captured over at #1 Son's place under 'battery'. We refer to this as the POS positive battery post/terminal.
