I think your blame is mis-placed.
"Mass reduction" is mostly a product of emissions and fuel-economy requirements. Add to that 'crashworthiness' regulations that require crush zones for occupant protection without thought as to extent of vehicle damage and you have $3500 'bumps'. If you truly recalled what it was like in the old days, would you really rather have your unbelted (who wore them back then) child getting rammed by a 5000 lb car with steel bumpers? any speed?
