life in the rust belt

Living in an area that uses tons of road salt every winter and also has periods of melting and freezing tempuratures, my 2000 Sub was diagnosed with rusting/rotting brake lines. This occured a month ago at my last oil change and my tech wanted me to know so I would be warned and could put aside a few bucks to deal with it. Little did I know that a line would burst within weeks - and was not even one of the really bad looking ones. Luckily, even though my 16 yr son was driving, the system did not lose all braking even though the pedal dropped almost to the floor. It did get progressively worse as the fluid drained out with each pump of the pedal.

After having my tech replace all of the brake lines and purge the system, my bill was $780. To my surprise, he was able to get all of the fittings and bleeders open/off so the only materials needed were the lines.
