The 5.7l TBI engine had more torque and made it easier to cruise over the varied terrain. The 5.3l struggles up some mountains. Keeping each at their "sweet spot" ( peak power rpm ) yields the best fuel mileage. Of course, this means you may be passed by traffic in most western states.

The 5.7 would get up to 20mpg on the freeway, and 15mpg in the city or off-road (not rock crawling). The 5.3 can get 20mpg on level highway, but drops to 18 on the hills.

Highway towing, the 5.7 would get 15mpg. The 5.3 towed at 12mpg.
