Sorry to say, but that's a 1957 Carryall, not a 1953. My dad had one back in the day.

The struts holding up the lift gate were not "assist" struts like today, but just a automatic locking/releasing prop rod. Push all the way up and let back and the props held. Push all the way up and back again and the props released.

The bottom gate had springs inside the gate to take up the cable, as I remember it. Surprised it didn't have the third tail light in the center that folded down to face backwards when the gate was down.

Nice small block conversion under the hood. The battery used to be on the firewall where the AC is now, and the brake single master cylinder used to be on the driver's side frame rail. Lqap seat belts were a dealer installed option.

Lots of good memories, thanks for the post.

: : I have one question:
: :
: : I can't see the Lift Cables or the Coil Springs! They look like Struts!
: :
:
: Sorry, lift gate has the struts and the tail gate has the cables
:
: OEM cables after over 50 years !!! They don't show any wear either
