While Ben is the usual voice for this issue, I thought I might give him a running start. The corrosion at the battery cables is a well known and documented issue on many GM vehicles, so far as I know. There were many dicussions on this board about how the lead spacer that GM uses on side terminal batteries gets deformed after the first tightening and allows the bolt to penetrate the battery case resulting in an acid leak. The acid wicks into the battery cable and corrodes it resulting in anything from wacky dashboard displays, odd error lights, poor performance and anti-lock brake malfunctions to dead batteries or alternators.
