Noise from an alternator has two failure modes that I know of.

#1 Bearing
#2 Brushes

Voltage can be caused by the brushes, but mainly by diodes going bad. Slipping V-Belt for the older vehicles.

I've seen commutators pit from voltage spikes, but mainly from current issues. The flash over on segmented commutators and then the bouncing of the brush on the copper bar. That will then have the copper bars of the commutator rough and make noise. Wears out the brushed fast too.

We used to have an abrasive bar that the service tech's would run over the bar to clean it up....though dangerous with +500VDC to ground floating around that spot...

These alternators have rings that is contiguous with no segments, so this should NOT be an issue.
