Peter, I think a similar 'bolt-in' upgrade is easily possible with yours, that a lot of us did on our GMT400 trucks.

On my '96, for example, I replaced the failed CS-130D to the heavier duty CS-144. It took a small adapter cable (the CS-144 used an older connector vs the CS-130D which used a newer Metripack connector). And yes, a slightly longer serpentine belt.

On your newer truck, you probably have a AD-230, and could like likewise upgrade to a AD-244. I would suspect that both use the same Metripack connector. If so, all you would need is the longer serpentine belt.

One little detail is that on my '96, there was a little mounting bracket bolted to the rear of the alternator that gave it a little extra support. I had to order a CS-144 version from the dealer for a few bucks. Most people don't even bother with the larger bracket, and GM themselves didn't even bother with it after '97.

I bought my CS-144 from a local auto electric shop that rebuilds them with all new AC Delco parts. It has been in there for about 8 years and continues to work fine.
