Hi All -
I am an occasional lurker here. I just replaced the front passenger Jounce Bumper on my Suburban, and I wanted to share what I learned, hoping it will make the job easier for the next person.
Parts: GM P/N 15835666 (for 2002 3/4T 4WD Suburban, 8.1 engine)
Tools: Torque wrench (22 ft lb), 15mm socket, extensions, jack.
Notes:
1) Access to the nut that holds the part in place is difficult; I was able to get to it with a wrench by using about 20" of extension between my torque wrench and the 15mm socket. The wrench goes in through the wheel well, and the extensions go down behind the shock to the nut. My assistant handled the wrench, and I guided the socket from below the vehicle.
2) Removal was straightforward, subject to wrench access as noted above.
3) I cleaned debris from the area using compressed air, so that the nut would seat properly.
4) There was not enough clearance between the mount and the lower control arm to insert the new bumper in place, so I needed to jack up the body. I used a floor jack, lifting the frame just being the font wheel.
5) Once the bumper was in place, putting the nut on was a challenge. I used a piece of paper between the nut and socket (to hold the nut inside the socket), and was able to guide the nut into place using the wrench.
6) Tighten to 22 ft lb, lower truck, clean up. Done!
7) In retrospect, I should have done both at the same time. I only did the passenger side, and the driver side is showing signs of deterioration.
Hope this helps someone ...
Paul
