You have either the 4L60 or 4L60E. I think the E's (electronic) came in '96.

If it is an E, the early ones had lots of problems. The main cause was that the solenoids that controlled the transmission would gall in the cylinders in the valve body. This led to bad shifting, partial shifts, burned clutches, and lots of other problems. Chevy really didn't fix this until 2002 or so.

So far as I know, the 4L60 showed no major faults other than being designed to be barely adequate for the 5.7 engine.

: To the best of my knowledge, the 4L60E was installed in all the 1/2 ton (1500) Suburbans.
:
: The 4L80E was used in the 3/4 ton (2500) models.

: : The trans started a really bad behavior the last time I drove it. The only way I can describe it is it felt like someone was disconnecting the battery. . . On and off very quickly.

: : I'm going to service the trans - never been done as far as I know. I was thinking it's the 4L80E. Odds on that being correct?
