Thanks for the tips.

For my model (1995 Suburban), I was able to access and replace the extendable cupholder with the following steps:

1. Detach the parking brake handle.

2. Remove the knee bolster plastic panel. The panel is held in place with four small bolts and 5 metal clips.

3. Lower the steering wheel column to lowest possible position and move the shifter lever all the way down into low gear.

4. Pop off the the plastic dash bezel which is held in place with a half-dozen metal clips. No need to completely remove the dash bezel - just move it upward to get some clearance.

5. The cupholder is held in place with three small bolts (two easy ones on the lower side, and one difficult one way back in the rear of the dash opening). A long socket extension is needed to access the deep one.

6. With the three bolts removed, it is a simple step to reverse the process for installing the new cupholder.
