:......It continually amazes me how they got excoriated in the press, when they weren't but marginally bigger than an older 'burb. They're very nearly The State Car of Texas around here.

A bit OT and also keeping it 'Burb' related, think it's to do with Ford's 'timing'...

Both with the general public and with the news media...Ford miscalculated the mentality of them both.

Advertised as the 'largest', 'baddest', etc SUV. I remember 'Urban assault vehicle' used by some of the press.

All during the height of the 'fashion statement' crowd's frenzy to jump on the SUV band wagon and
the subsequent general dislike of that 'type' of person, but since the general public all too PC
about things....they blamed the inanimate object, the SUV, instead of who/what they really
disliked/hated...the person owning/driving.

GM didn't advertise the Suburban as that, but a general SUV. The 'assault vehicle' types of ads
came later and my guess in response to Ford's ads.

Have to admit that I looked at an Excursion when they first came out. Mainly because I thought
they were based on a 1 ton chassis (so should be higher tow ratings), which turned out to be
incorrect. At that time, it had a much lower tow/haul rating, so stopped right there. About
2-3 years later, Ford increased it's ratings, but wasn't interested anymore.

I'm still coming up on the diesel curve. Had stopped researching/reading/etc when the prices
out paced gasoline, but restarted now that I've found out that there are several algae based
bio-diesel producers coming on line. One company says they can produce enough bio-diesel for the
whole country with about 1/10th the area of New Mexico. They also claim the algae consumes CO2 in
the process, so a win/win.
