Tap the enlarged hole for a larger diameter screw?
Drill through the piece and use a nut behind it?
Helicoil?
All farm solutions. You get very creative when town is 10+ miles away and the gas for the trip costs way more than the 10 cent screw.
: Your original method---epoxy the hole, insert the screw---will work quite well if you coat the screw with Stop-Off first. If you can't find Stop-Off, wrap the screw threads tightly with teflon tape before installing. It will not have the holding power of base metal, but will provide minimum clamping force.
