Any in-tank pump the size of the one used by GM (and others) is being asked to perform alot. People who like to keep the fuel between empty and half-full, or those that run out of gas are much more likely to have pump failure. All of my GM vehicles have been kept above half full whenever practical and I've never had a problem. The fuel in the tank is what keeps the pump cool. In a return system, most of what the pump sends to the engine comes back into the tank and it comes back HOT. The more fuel in the tank, the bigger the heat sink for that hot fuel. I had to fill some 5 gallon jugs from my vehicle when the power went out and the containers were too hot to carry without gloves!
