Maybe not typical but I have a horror story about this solution. Let me say first that I fully endorse this as a method for backing up your data. That said, the idea of a backup is to keep data safe in case a recovery is needed.

My brother has a laptop with all of his doctoral research and thesis work stored on it. He has an office on the first floor of his house. On his desk was his laptop and his external hard drive - thinking that his backup copy was just in case he lost or damaged his laptop.

Well, his house was broken into one night while everyone was asleep. As you can guess, they took his laptop and his backup device (external hard drive). All that work is now gone. So much for backups.

The lesson here is that you don't keep all your eggs in one room.
