How in the world could alcohol have anything to do with it? Alcohol enhanced fuels have been readily available since the late 70's, and spec'd for Infiniti since they were first produced in 1990! Time to get over your fear of alcohol fuels, Ben.

How about the fact that Infiniti has a TSB for inaccurate fuel gauges---it is a common problem for the QX4:

SERVICE INFORMATION

If an applied 1997-99 QX4 has a fuel gauge that does not read full after the tank has been filled, the cause may be the fuel gauge sending unit.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Verify the fuel gauge in the combination meter is working correctly. Refer to "Inspection/Fuel Tank Gauge Unit" in the Meters and Gauges/EL section of the Service Manual.

2. If the gauge is operating correctly, replace the fuel gauge sending unit using the procedure outlined below.

WARNING: Before removing the fuel lines or sending unit, release the pressure in the lines and tank. Refer to the MA section (changing fuel filter) of the Service Manual.

3. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.

4. Flip the rear seat cushion up and forward, then remove the inspection hole cover (see Figure 1)

5. Disconnect harness connectors from under the inspection hole cover.

6. Put mating marks on the fuel hoses for correct reinstallation, then disconnect them.

7. Remove the original fuel gauge sending unit and install the replacement part. Install the part.

CAUTION: Always replace the fuel gauge sending unit O-ring and fuel hose clamps.

8. Connect the harness connectors and fuel hoses. Do not overtighten the clamps.

9. Start the engine and check for leaks before reinstalling the inspection hole cover.
