There's no such thing as not-hard codes. At least on an 01. Your SES can only blink in the presence of engine misfire....period. That condition always stores a code which you should be able to see. A hard shift usually means a code has set and the trans is operating at full line pressure to protect itself. Get a good scan tool (Tech 2 preferred) and recheck for codes. Base your next step off those results.
With 135K and brown fluid, a flush or drain/refill will likely kill the trans within HOURS. The fresh detergents in the new oil tend to remove the small amount of clutch material you likely have remaining.
Save your money for the trans rebuild you probably need. Average price should be $1200-$1400.
