It sounds like you are looking for the ½ ton model rather than the ¾ ton (Z71 is ½ only). In light of gas prices, unless you really need something to tow .the ½ ton is the way to go. I have an 04 ¾ ton with the 8.1L and get about 11-12 MPG. The 5.3L should get closer to 15-16 ..not bad for a large truck. I would think you can get lower mileage on a truck with today s gas prices.
Things to look for:
Brakes and remaining life on the pads
Tires and condition
Fuel pump replaced recently?
A/C blowing cold
NAV rare option but have heard performance is pretty bad compared to a Garmin portable so not worth it.
Transmission shifting smoothly? Check color.
Has the Intake Manifold gasket been replaced?
Overall interior/exterior condition. If it has a bunch of door dings and a few stains inside the truck, chances are it was not taken care of very well.

We had a Tahoe but was just a touch too small for 3 kids, 2 labs, wife and myself. The suburban is very functional.

If you want an 04 Volvo XC90 w/65k miles on it for $17,500 .let me know. We are keeping the suburban and selling the Volvo. Bought a Camry Hybrid.

Hope this gets you started.
