: ::Yeah, any bonding agent used is going to increase thickness. Coefficient standards are per ASTM D4518. The gearboxes we use from ZED-F (Germany) use a special coating, very thin, on pinions and ring gears. I'll inquire what they use.

Tungsten Dislufide is a cold process that leaves a 1-2 micron coating. It's grey/blue in color with many hues in certain lighting. Takes same surface finish as base metal and does not change the metalergy or temper. Both surfaces need to be similarly coated for best performance, though one surface is satisfactory in some applications.

Your gear box is perfect application. Sliding and rolling surface to surface, but should have liquid lub too. Espeically in high speed gear boxes, liquid lub is important because if the surface flim strength high enough, the gear surfaces never actually touch and only ride on the flim of lub. Shock loads can squeeze the lub out and that is where a dry lub gives additional benefit (what application does not have shock loads... :)

I'll post some of the Tunsgten Disulfide and Molybdenum Disulfide vendors found recently (the industry has grown and matured greatly since last looked, but there's still a bunch of snake oil vendors... :(

Thanks a bunch!
