: BTW, is there a better way to torque down a hitch ball than using a torque wrench on the nut and a pipe wrench on the ball?

Yes. On the bottom of the flange of the hitch ball, drill a 1/8" hole, 1/16" deep. Do the same to the top of the ball mount in a location that matches the other hole. Insert a 1/8" steel---not copper or lead---BB in the hole, place the hitch ball over the BB and tighten to 180 ft lbs for 3/4" shank and 250 ft lbs for 1" shank. Obviously, you can accomplish the same thing using a larger diameter steel ball (from an old bearing?), but I wouldn't recommend going larger than ~1/4" diameter.
