There is a screw at the front of the door panel that screws into the lip. Once this screw is removed the panel should pop out as described below.
I just had my front and rear door panels off on my 87 last Sunday. It took me 20 minutes and alot of swearing, before I noticed that screw. The front door panels do not have that screw.

: The panel is kind of snapped over the lip along the top edge of the door. It removes vertically, so do not pull the door panel out away from the door too far. Be sure the window is rolled down all the way and all fasteners and whatnot are removed or disconnected (they like to hide these so be careful). Pull the panel away from the door slightly then start tugging the panel upwards. It should pop loose. Good luck.
