Hi -
I've got a 87 Sub 2500 4x4 6.2L diesel - I was driving her home right before Isabel and decided to switch into 4HI due to the wind+rain. Tried to disengage the next morning and it doesn't seem to be quite right. Now I get a noise from the drivers side front wheel (I think) - sounds like a piece of plastic running against the spokes of a turning bicycle wheel, disappears at around 35mph (or sub noise is too loud to hear clicking/ticking). Then when I brake, just as it comes to a complete stop it sounds like a gear clunking into place and the noise may go away temporarily - or not.
Is it something in the self locking hubs? Do they need to be packed with grease, has a bearing gone? - or is this something else altogether?
Haven't ever taken apart the auto locking hub - looks somewhat complicated? Anyone done that and is it something to watch first and then try, or can a handy guy figure it out on their own?
If I do take it apart, are there standard wear parts worth replacing while I am in there?
Thanks in advance - this board is the best for Sub related info!
