Both diff and tranny fluid should be changed more often than usual if you tow alot.
Also make sure your 96 has the transmission fix for the bad VCM connection - this has been known to chew up trannys if not fixed. You will know if it has been fixed if you have a tag with service # 16244210 on top of the VCM inside the engine compartment on drivers side.
