Design practice is to pick a link 2 to 4 sizes smaller than the wire it's protecting...if an 8awg wire is coming off the alternator output, you'd pick a 12 to 16agw wire as the link. If you're using a 200A alternator, fuse should be 250A. Obviously, you will carry a couple of spares ":).
