I'll be the first to admit that I don't have the technical or mechanical background that you do. My own personal wrenching has gotten less & less over the years.
I've found a marginal mpg gain using higher octane fuels (based on records over years from several vehicles). And although I don't think the performance gain is significant, it makes me feel better. But with gas prices going up again, I may reconsider.
I will keep a closer eye on things based upon your advice/comments. I do monitor the guages whenever I drive. Also, the truck easily passed emissions test with programming installed.

: The newer the engine and control system, the better the electronic control. In your case it may work fine, but do you see any benefit. Risking the warranty on an $8000 engine is not everyone's cup of tea either. I've never seen a programming company say their code is GM approved. May never be due to federal laws and the huge expense to certify for the EPA.
: TBI's on the other hand have so low of compression, that I doubt there really is a 93 octane calibration. The '96 to '00 Vortecs require some caution.
