Don't blame the t-stat... It's the installer that was at fault (and a sh1tty Chiltons manual, but we won't go into how useless those books are).
The t-stat is one of the easiest things to change on these... Be glad it wasn't a ball joint you were having problems with!
Hope things are working out for you now with teh stat in right. If not, we're here for ya.
