Depending on where the stearing unit came from (new or rebuilt/salvage yard), it could be a seal or valve problem. I replaced mine several years ago (went rebuilt), and the Sub turned easier to the right than to the left (that was a valve problem), so the left turn valve was sticking. After time, it lessened in effect so turning is close to normal.
I have also seen where a rebuilt unit had the adjusting nut turned too tight, resulting in gear binding (tight at the steering wheel).
Also, did you have the pump flushed at the same time of doing the steering gear? Some impurities may have gotten into the system (affecting valves in the box).
Didn't someone mention before a connection between steering and the (ABS?) wheel sensors?
Depending on who did the job, you might want to check with them, and recheck your warranty period. If it isn't resolved, get it fixed before it expires.
