This may not be relevant since you've just had steering work done, but my 99 K1500 steering was groaning and someone suggested I spray a little bit of spray lithium grease on the shaft where it rubs on the rubber boot inside the vehicle.
I usually don't get lucky with such easy fixes, but this one worked! It seems to come back every 12-18 months. I just shoot a little more lube in there and it clears up.
