It wasn't a great movie at that, was it?
Acutally, WinALDL only logs data ... it can't modify or change anything. On my old '87 ECM it logs a complete ECM data set every 1.2 seconds.
To modify the table settings on early models ECM's you need (1) a chip reader that downloads the data (2) a program that decodes the data into an easily read format and one that will let you change the settings (assuming you don't want to work directly in hexidecimal) (3) a chip burner to enter the changes you've made and (4) a UV chip eraser so you can reuse chips.
There are chip wedges and programs for some ECM's that will allow you to make changes on the fly using a PC, but you'd still need to burn a final version of your settings.
BTW it's not necessary to plug the PC adaptor directly into the ALDL plug. In my application the ALDL port is located on the drivers side and I was not comfortable having to loop the PC cable over the drivers legs while driving on a data collecting run. So I spliced into the ALDL harness near the ECM and ran the three wires needed for the interface to a common 3 pin connector that is tucked up under the glove box.
Turns out you can run both a scanner and the PC if you want to.
