I took the Burb to my trusted mechanic for it's regular oil/lube. He looked at the brakes and called me into the bay to see the problem. (It feels like going to the principal's office - you know its never for good news).
The brake pads are worn down, the rotors are rusted and the splash guards are rusted out, coming apart and rubbing against the rotors. So, I am looking at new pads, splash guards and probably new rotors all around.
I asked about the cryogenic treated rotors. He never heard of the cryo-rotors but he did just put treated pistons or sleeves into his rebuilt 1967 Pontiac engine. He felt that unles you drive real hard, the cryo wasn't going to change much on my Burb.
He sounded like he hadn't replaced splash guards on a NBS Suburban recently and said he was willing to skip the new ones if it meant pulling the axle. (any idea what's involved?)
Any thoughts or comments?
The burb is the wifes daily driver. 2000 NBS K1500, 5.3L, 37,000 miles. No previous brake work. We live in the "rust belt" - Cleveland, OH so road salt and snow take a big toll on things. I suppose the splash guards are gone because of the salt.
